Anaïs Mitchell's folk-and-jazz opera intertwines two Greek myths: the poet Orpheus, who descends into the industrial underworld of Hadestown to win back Eurydice, and the gods Hades and Persephone, wrestling with a marriage gone cold. A sung-through, New Orleans-tinged fable about doubt, love, and singing the world back into tune — it's a sad song, and we sing it anyway. "Sumptuous. Gorgeous. As good as it gets" (The New York Times).
